Too creative?

In the field of data and statistics there's a concept called the curse of dimensionality. This is when the information about an object one is observing becomes too complex. Basically when there's too much information, processing that information becomes difficult, time consuming and costly. The task or question at hand is to figure out how much information to exclude for the sake of being able to make calculations with ease.

When the matter is translated to the field of art, there seems to be a question I have pondered on. Is it possible for one to be too creative ? To be so imaginative that it turns into a curse. The norm in the creative world is that the sky is the limit. People are applauded for forming new ways to express their emotions and tell stories. How does something so positively affirmed in its domain turn to be an artist's bane?

If simplicity is the make of genius, then complexity must be that of a madman. What I mean is that as a creative for your work to be widely appreciated, it must be widely understood. This can be measured by metrics off of internet platforms, the biggest brands and personalities online are those that can reach across different cultures and schools of thought. It does not leave much room for one to dig into a niche as the added complexity of doing so leaves out those who may not appreciate it.

The question is then begged to be asked about the function of the object being made. This where I can easily spot or identify the curse of creativity. In venturing to be avant-garde the objective functionality can be compromised. What use would a spoon be if it had helicopter blades, it would be cool to play with or have  as a centre piece of sorts, at the same time such a utensil would leave a terrible mess at your dinner table. There is a line that demarcates innovation and degeneracy, with the freedom that comes with  being an artist the line can be so easily crossed.

Giorgio Moroder puts it beautifully in an interview, he said, "Once you free your mind about a concept of Harmony and of music being "correct. You can do whatever you want.''. This is quite a liberating discovery that he made, one's style does not have to be conforming to a correct way of falling in line with everything else. This lead Giorgio to find what he called a sound of the future, he was able to carve his own path a pioneer a new sound within the music industry.

Unfortunately discovering something of the future means that at times you are  too ahead of your own time and context. This may mean that your peers misunderstand you because you are not on the same page or chapter. You have to be willing enough to chase your passion to the point of being unidentifiable at present time. It's a melancholic path, a lonely one where no one understands your joys, trials and achievement. Are you willing to take one small step for your own sanity or a giant leap for humanity? The effects of your leap is the materialisation of stepping stones for those who are trying to find their way.

You may never get your flowers in your lifetime, but is that not what immortality is? To know that your sweat and tears  birthed something that transcends time. Due to the fact that there is no such thing as being incorrect you technically can't fail. Perhaps maybe pouring your milk before cereal will be something to be hailed in the unforeseen future.

  1. What a thought provoking read! “There is a line that demarcates innovation and degeneracy“, that is so true. Though I hope people of the future don’t reach such a state of degeneracy that pouring milk becomes the norm.
